Truck crashes into church

December 18, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

HAGERSTOWN -- A pickup truck crashed into the front of Calvary Grace Brethren Church off of West Franklin Street on Thursday afternoon, damaging the church's sign and a stair railing.

Pastor Douglas Courter said police told him the driver had dental work done earlier in the day and blacked out behind the wheel while he was driving on West Franklin Street.

The driver was taken to Washington County Hospital, Courter said.

The officer who responded to the incident could not be reached Thursday and police department supervisors did not have any further information on the incident or the driver's condition.

Tire marks were visible in the dirt on the left side of West Franklin Street, across Bryant Place from the church, and in the dirt in front of the church. The church's message board sign leaned backward and letters were scattered on the ground in front of it. A wooden column on the front of the building was splintered, some bricks were knocked loose and one of the black, metal handrailings on the church's front steps was torn from the brick and twisted. Broken glass littered the turf-covered steps.

Courter said the damage to the building appeared minor. The sign was worth about $4,500 when the church bought it, he said. Luckily, the wheelchair lift equipment behind the sign seemed to have escaped any damage, he said.

The church will clean up as much of the damage as possible before Christmas events scheduled for this weekend, he said.
