Jan. 1 plunge to benefit Humane Society

December 17, 2008

Members of the Williamsport Polar Bear Club and the Board of Directors and staff at the Humane Society of Washington County are inviting everyone to become official Williamsport Polar Bears by taking the chilly plunge into the Potomac River Jan. 1 at noon.

The event takes place at the Williamsport boat ramp and all proceeds benefit the Humane Society.

Original club member Todd Bowman is looking forward to another great gathering of the Williamsport Polar Bears.

"We're really anxious to see a big crowd out there this year," Bowman said. "For the past three or four years, it's been real mild so we are due for a cold one. So it would separate out the men from the boys."

Paul Miller, executive director of the animal shelter, is also anticipating a great event. "This is really becoming a tradition for a lot of people and we hope more will join us," he said. "Each year, we seem to get a larger crowd and we hope for a record number this year."

Prizes for the two people who obtain the greatest amount of pledges are being donated by the Alpaca Shop LLC, Spirit of the Lotus Tea Co., Toppings Pizza Co., Kuddle Kennels, Simply pAwesome Dog Treats, BJ's Custom Creations, Regal Cinemas Valley Mall Stadium 16 and the Lenox Distribution Group Inc.

Fresh-brewed hot coffee is being donated by Sheetz on National Pike and Sander's Cookie Jar Bakery is donating baked goods for the event.

Ellsworth Electric, BJ's Custom Creations and the Alpaca Shop LLC are event sponsors.
