Checkpoints likely in Berkeley County this weekend

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two sobriety checkpoints might be staged on U.S. 11 in Berkeley County by the West Virginia State Police, beginning at 8 p.m on Friday and continuing until 2 a.m. on Saturday, State Police First Sgt. E.D. Burnett announced Tuesday.

The possible checkpoint locations are at the road's intersection with Mineral Drive in front of Musselman High School and in front of a carpet business between Paynes Ford Road and the U.S. 11 intersection with Apple Harvest Drive, police said.

Alternate routes for the checkpoint locations are Interstate 81, Paynes Ford Road, Apple Harvest Drive, W.Va. 51 and Henshaw Road.

Chambersburg woman faces charges of filing a false report

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A borough woman was charged last week by the Chambersburg Police Department with filing a false report of a sexual assault.

Carolyn Ann Kerns, 46, of 317 S. Main St., allegedly filed a false report on Tuesday, Dec. 9, that a juvenile had been sexually assaulted in her home, police said.


Eight hit with DUI charges at checkpoint

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Eight motorists were charged with driving under the influence as a result of a sobriety checkpoint and roving patrols Saturday night and Sunday morning, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The checkpoint was set up on U.S. 30 in Hamilton Township between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., police said. The patrols ranged along U.S. 30 from St. Thomas Township east to Guilford Township, police said.

Police said the enforcement effort also resulted in one person being charged with underage consumption of alcohol and one with drug possession, along with 37 traffic citations and 29 written warnings, police said.

Hagerstown police respond to calls

Hagerstown Police responded to the following incidents Monday:

o At 6:06 a.m., damage to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of Mitchell Avenue. A window was broken.

o At 8:02 a.m., counterfeit currency was reported at Borders, 17636 Garland Groh Blvd.

o At 9:27 a.m., theft of a vehicle was reported in the first block of West Baltimore Street. A 2006 Dodge Intrepid with the Maryland tag number 80217HV was taken.

o At 10:05 a.m., theft was reported in the first block of Elizabeth Street. Maryland tag number 7DNJ95 and a gas grill were taken.

o At 10:45 a.m., stolen property was recovered on South Potomac Street. A purple 2005 Tomas moped was found.

o At 11:02 a.m., damage to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of South Street. A window was damaged.

o At 6:41 p.m., a strong-arm robbery was reported at ALDI, 565 Dual Highway. Currency was taken.

o At 10:14 p.m., theft from a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of the Dual Highway. A video game system and game cartridges were taken.
