GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Maurice "June" Lowans Jr., 84, of 3140 Hill Road, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at his home.

Born June 28, 1924, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Maurice R. and Annie K. Kuhn Lowans.

He retired from Charles E. Brake Excavating Co. of St. Thomas, Pa., where he worked as a blaster and truck driver.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose of Chambersburg, Pa., Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241 and American Legion, both of Mercersburg.


He is survived by his wife, Mary K. Barnhart Lowans, whom he married May 5, 1947; eight daughters, Arlene Gordon of Hagerstown, Darlene Foust of Chambersburg, Donna Wertz of Bedford, Pa., Trudy Lowans of Chambersburg, Teresa Hockenberry of Fort Loudon, Pa., Kathy Chilcote and Dawn King, both of Mercersburg, and Anita Sheffield of Greencastle; four sons, Gary Barnhart of Harrisonville, Pa., Donald Lowans of Fort Loudon, Raymond Lowans of Mercersburg and Tim Lowans of Greencastle; four sisters, Betty Johns of Chambersburg, Glenna Evans of Schuylkill Haven, Pa., Patsy DuBois of Florida and Shirley Shatzer of Greencastle; one brother, Marcus N. Lowans of Waynesboro, Pa.; 29 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond R. Lowans.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle. The Rev. Raymond Martin will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
