CAVETOWN, Md. - Gump (Mahlon) Andrew Wynkoop, 72, died on Dec. 13, 2008, at his home in Cavetown.

Born Jan. 12, 1936, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of Violet Catherine (Randall) Wynkoop and Ross Cornelius Wynkoop of Hagerstown.

Retired since 1979, he was a former supervisor for Packaging Services in Williamsport, Md.

He also served as a member of the Eagles Club of Waynesboro, Pa.; the Hagerstown Fire Department, Junior Fire Company No. 3; and the American Legion-Morris Frock Drum and Bugle Corps.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jessie Irene (Witmer) Wynkoop; three children, son, Douglas Randall Wynkoop (married to Cathy Wynkoop) of Smithsburg, Md.; son, Gregory Lynn Wynkoop (married to Lisa Wynkoop) of Boonsboro, Md.; and daughter, Ronda Diana Shifler (married to Michael Shifler) of Boonsboro; one sister, Margaret King of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Tracey and Deron Malcolm, Kelly Wynkoop, Doug and Tara Wynkoop, Angie and Andy Stottlemyer, Cameron Shifler and Sean Wynkoop; and six great-grandchildren, Payton, Delaney and Parker Malcolm, Andi Wynkoop, Cole Mastin and Michael Wynkoop.


He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Geraldine M. Hull, Catherine J. Brown and Delores L. Smith; one brother, Jamers M. Wynkoop; and two half brothers, Ross C. Wynkoop and Arthur N. Wynkoop.

A viewing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. On Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Rest Haven Chapel, a viewing will be held at 10 a.m. and the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
