Bulldog Federal Credit Union

Bulldog Federal Credit Union, the only Washington County financial institution that is locally owned, is celebrating 40 years in the financial business.

The credit union was formed in 1968 by members of Mack Trucks Union Local 171. It began operating out of the back of a car in the parking lot at Mack Trucks, then later in the vestibule of the union hall. The operation was staffed by volunteers until a paid staff was hired in 1977 and the operation moved into its first office on Oak Hill Avenue.

Bulldog expanded its membership in 1982 to include other local manufacturing employee groups. The credit union moved to its present location at 580 Northern Ave. in 1982, and opened its first branch office on York Road in 1987.

In 2001, with more than 100 sponsor groups, the credit union applied for and received a community charter from the National Credit Union Administration. The community charter enabled membership privileges to be available to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Washington County.

The credit union has more than 24,000 members and $105 million in assets.
