Sheriff's fundraiser was a legitimate operation

December 13, 2008

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County law enforcement corrected themselves Friday, saying information released earlier in the week about a scam was erroneous.

Police in Waynesboro, Pa., and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office had distributed information about a man posing as a sheriff's office fundraiser. That information was published Thursday in The Herald-Mail.

However, Sheriff Dane Anthony said Friday that the man was representing his office through a contracted business. The man had approached The Beer Shed in Waynesboro about donating to a youth program.

Waynesboro police were contacted because The Beer Shed staff had concerns about the man's legitimacy. When Anthony learned that a man 6 foot, 5 inches tall was involved, he initially thought it was a scam artist because none of his employees fits that description.
