December 12, 2008

A Virginia man was charged Thursday after a carjacking was reported at 6:01 p.m. at Sheetz at 1396 S. Potomac Ave., police said

Michael Lawrence O'Reilly Jr., 29, of 1012 Queens Court in Herndon, Va., is charged with carjacking, robbery, second-degree assault, theft of more than $500 and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

The 89-year-old victim was at the AC&T at 1449 S. Potomac St. when a man approached him and asked for a ride to the Sheetz, according to charging documents. The victim gave the man a ride, and when the victim pulled over to let the man out of the vehicle, the man said "I need your car" and pushed the victim out of the vehicle, documents allege.

Troopers saw the vehicle several minutes later driving east on Interstate 70. Troopers pulled over the vehicle, and the driver said he bought the car for $20 at the Sheetz store in Hagerstown, charging documents show.
