LEITERSBURG - Harold P. Byrd, 89, of Leitersburg Smithsburg Rd., went peacefully to his new dimension Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, from the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 4, 1919, in Keedysville, Md., he was the son of the late David Isiah and Amanda Virginia (Babington) Byrd.

He attended the Mt. Aetna School House.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He retired from Mack Trucks of Hagerstown in 1982 after 20 years of service.

He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Disabled American Veterans Association, American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 of Hagerstown, VFW of Hagerstown, helped organize the Leitersburg Fire Company in 1956 and was involved in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938 to 1940.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret C. (Theiss) Byrd, whom he married Jan. 14, 1944, daughter Lynda M. Asbury and husband Benny of Wolfsville, Md., son Douglas D. Byrd and wife Kimberly of Martinsburg, W.Va., brother W. Wayne Byrd of Hagerstown, Md., grandchildren Jessica Griffin, Wade Byrd and Keith Byrd, great-grandson Evan James Byrd and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters Zella Etalka & Phyllis Catherine Byrd and brothers Donald Leo Byrd, David Olin Byrd, Russell Herbert Byrd and Robert L. Byrd.

Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg with Pastor Gerrard Fess officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Locust Grove, Md., with military honors given by the AMVETS of Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Friday December 12, 2008 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Harold to the Leitersburg Fire Company at 21431 Leiter St., Hagers-town, MD 21742.
