PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. - Dr. Howard Newton Carper Jr., 80, of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., and Shepherdstown, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, N.C.

Born Oct. 8, 1928, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of the late Howard Newton and Goldie Griffith Carper.

He graduated from Shepherd College with a bachelor of science degree, received his master of science degree from James Madison University and his doctoral degree was conferred by American University.

He worked at Shepherd College, retiring as vice president of academic affairs in 1993.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club and a director emeritus for BB&T. He was also a member of the Holy Mackerel Fishing Club, St. Egbert's, Morehead City.


He was a member of Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean Smith Carper of Pine Knoll Shores; one daughter, Lisa K. Carper of Shepherdstown; one son, Howard Carper III of Cleveland; one sister, Gail C. Russell of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Ronald Carper of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown. The Rev. Mathew Rowgh will officiate. The family will host a reception after the service in the Storer Ballroom in the Student Center on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shepherd University Foundation or the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department.
