HANCOCK - James L. Roby Sr., age 96, formerly of Little Orleans and a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at the home.

Born June 5, 1912, in Little Orleans, he was the son of the late John H. and Mary G. Butts Roby, and the husband of the late Clara L. McDonald Roby, who died March 2, 1987.

He was a member of the Hancock Lions Club, where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow, 22W District Secretary 1973-1974, and a member of the James W. Bowers Lodge AF&AM 173, Hancock.


He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine, Cumberland, Md., the Scottish Rite Railroad Unit and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 3, Hagerstown, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 245, Cumberland.

He was a member of Piney Plains United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna J. Martin of Palm Beach Garden, Fla.; one son, James L. Roby Jr., and wife, Wanda, of Hagerstown; one sister, Juanita Gray of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Lisa Roby of Martinsburg, W.Va., Tamera Bailey and husband, John, of Hagerstown, Carla Silverii and husband, Robert, of Dayton, Ohio, and Stephen Gray of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren, Scott Bailey, Katie Bailey, Robbie Hancher and Devon Roby.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Webb, Mary Portmess and Erma Wigfield; five brothers, Edward Roby, Leo Roby, Earl Roby, Joseph Roby and August Roby; and three grandchildren, James L. Roby III, Barbara Roby and Richard Smith.

A service will be held Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. David Bucher will officiate. Burial will follow in Martin Cemetery, Little Orleans, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., where a Masonic service will be conducted by the James W. Bowers AF&AM 173 of Hancock at 7 p.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will open at 2 p.m.
