Brightman says eadership decisions should be made in public

The Washington County Board of Education voted Tuesday to name Wayne D. Ridenour its president and Ruth Anne Callaham its vice president.

The votes were each 6-0. Board member Donna Brightman abstained from voting, saying the board should have made its decision-making process public. She said discussions were conducted in a meeting earlier that day that was closed to the public.

Brightman said that practice could violate the Maryland Open Meetings Act and said she informed her fellow board members of her concerns.

"My feeling is that public business should be done in the public as much as possible," Brightman said.
