Shepherd music students win awards

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University music majors won various prizes at the 42nd Annual State Conference of the West Virginia Music Teachers Association (WVMTA).

Shepherd students who won competitions on Nov. 7 and 8 include Matthew Carey, New Market, Md., who received first place in the State Collegiate Piano competition; Kari Edge, Halltown, W.Va., who received honorable mention in Collegiate Piano; Jason Solounias, Havre de Grace, Md., who received first place for Young Artist Piano; and the members of the Shepherd University Saxophone Quartet, Katie Beach, Germantown, Md., Thad Garrett, Moorefield, W.Va., Ryan Yost, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Jordan English, Martinsburg, W.Va., who received second place for Young Artist Chamber Music.

Junior high and high school students of Scott Beard, associate professor of music and coordinator of keyboard studies at Shepherd, also were competition winners.

The winners will continue on to the 13-state Eastern Division competitions to be held at West Chester University in Pennsylvania in January.
