Mildred G. Detrow passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 5, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Oscar M. and Nellie I. Smith.

She had been employed at Fairchild Cafeteria and Stoners Country Kitchen on Prospect Street.

Mildred had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown, Md., for 73 years, joining when she was 13 years old. She was also a member of the Temple Builders Sunday School Class.

She is survived by one son, Donald E. Detrow, and wife, Nancy; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, Dawn Thomas and husband, Mike, and great-grandchildren, Brandi and Mikel, Keith Detrow and wife, Mendy, and great-grandchildren, Bryan and Matthew, Katie Peck and husband, Tim, and great-granddaughter, Janell. She is also survived by one brother, Oscar M. Smith Jr., and wife, Esther; sister, Violet Toms; sister-in-law, Lorraine Miller; sister, Virgie Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Detrow, whom she was married to for 60 years; and two sisters, Lucille Mertz and Margaret Crawford.

The family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Clark Carr officiating.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or the Hurst House, 1830 Amherst St., Winchester, VA 22601, in memory of Mildred Detrow and in honor of Brandi Thomas, who was severely hurt in an automobile accident on Nov. 1, 2008.
