Teacher of the Year nominations sought in Wash. Co.

Nominations for the Washington County Public Schools' (WCPS) 2009 Teacher of the Year Award are being accepted through Jan. 23.

The annual Teacher of the Year Program is sponsored by the Hagers-town/Washington County Chamber of Commerce Foundation Inc., in partnership with WCPS. A group of finalists will be selected from all nominations and one teacher will represent Washington County in the Maryland State Teacher of the Year awards program.

The 2008 WCPS Teacher of the Year was Shanna Byrd, a fourth-grade magnet teacher at Williamsport Elementary School.

Students, parents, community organizations, businesses, colleagues and administrators may nominate teachers who have displayed outstanding teaching skills and ability.

A teacher of the year candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a position as a full-time classroom, resource or media teacher who spends a majority of his or her time teaching.

  • Have a minimum of five years of teaching experience.

  • Must remain in a teaching position during the next school year.

The Washington County Teacher of the Year Award Dinner is to be held April 22 at Fountain Head Country Club.
