County Commuter adding senior center to route

December 08, 2008

Starting Monday, Washington County will offer fixed-route County Commuter bus service to the Washington County Senior Center, county spokesman Norman Bassett said in a news release.

The senior center is in the Girls Inc. building at 626 Washington Ave.

To serve the center, the Washington County Transit Department is extending the weekday inbound segment of the Long Meadow Northern trip route up West Franklin Street to Winter Street, and adding a stop at the intersection of Winter Street and Washington Avenue, Bassett said.

The route will run to the transfer point under the railroad bridge on West Washington Street via Washington Avenue for connections to other buses.

Cost to seniors is 95 cents per one-way trip during peak time, and 60 cents per one-way trip during off-peak times, which are 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fare includes one free transfer.

The addition is the latest cooperative measure between the Washington County Commissioners and the Commission on Aging, Bassett said.

"This type of service will benefit a larger amount of the general population," county transit director Kevin Cerrone said. "Our fixed-route service also connects with many of the senior housing complexes and pockets of population that may have an interest in the programs being offered at the Senior Center."

The Long Meadow Northern route runs every hour at 15 minutes after the hour and was chosen in an effort to minimize disruptions in service.

The "Taxi Voucher" (SSTAP) program for those 60 and older and the Paratransit program for individuals with disabilities of any age, provide service to the senior center on a curb-to-curb basis.

Taxi vouchers are available for $3.75 for a book of vouchers valued at $10 and the Paratransit program costs $2 per one-way trip. Both programs require an application to determine eligibility of usage.
