CLEAR SPRING - Even though Christmas comes every year, Christmas in Clear Spring -- as a garden club event -- only happens every three years.

On Saturday, from 5:20 to 8:30 p.m., festivities will be held throughout the town and at Plumb Grove near the school complex west of town. The kickoff location is the Verizon Building on the east end of town.

One of the main events is a Christmas decorating contest sponsored by the Clear Spring Town Council, which will award prizes.

A model train display will be set up at Silver Plume Station, 150 Cumberland St.

Town Hall is where refreshments will be served and bathroom facilities are available.

Greens will be on sale at Cumberland Street and Md. 68 -- at the Nationwide Insurance location.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance at Town Hall.

Plumb Grove will be open from 2 p.m. to midnight. There is a $5 fee for nonmembers to enter.

From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., a special Christmas in Clear Spring cancellation will be available at the old post office on Cumberland Street, according to Clear Spring Postmaster Lori Kriner.

"People can bring their own Christmas cards in to be mailed that evening with the special cancellation," Kriner said. Those cards will be taken to be mailed then at no extra charge.

Books of Christmas stamps will be sold, as will the Christmas in Clear Spring notecards. Commemorative envelopes with a Christmas in Clear Spring label will be sold for $2 each.

The old post office now serves as the headquarters of the Clear Spring District Historical Association.

A live nativity will be at St. John's UCC Church, Cumberland Street and Md. 68, at 5:20 and 6:50 p.m.

Open houses will begin at 5 p.m. at Wilson Store and Village, 14921 Rufus Wilson Road; Miller's Farmstead, 14506 Old National Pike; and Parcenia Trumpower's home at 214 Cumberland St.

A brass ensemble will perform at the Verizon Building at 5:20 p.m.; a flute trio at St. John's UCC at 5:35 p.m. and a mime presentation at 7:05 p.m.; The Reflection show choir from Clear Spring High School will perform at St. Peter's Lutheran at 6:40 and 8:10 p.m.; Colleen Clark will be at St. Michael Catholic Church at 6:20 and 7:50 p.m.; and a bagpiper is scheduled to perform at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Cookie decorating for ages 12 and younger will be available all evening at Perry House of St. Andrew's.

Schedules and maps will be available from docents dressed in Santa Claus hats at several locations throughout town.

The town spring will be decorated.
