Hickory students honor veterans

December 07, 2008

The third-grade students at Hickory Elementary School performed a musical tribute to veterans on Nov. 11. The students invited their family members, friends and neighbors who are veterans.

The Civil Air Patrol of Hagerstown opened the program by presenting the colors for the evening. The students, dressed in patriotic colors and coordinated glittery hats, then led the Pledge of Allegiance and "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Many patriotic selections were performed, including the anthems of the five branches of the military. Students represented the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Coast Guard by wearing the uniform of each branch and marching to center stage during each theme song.

A presentation depicting scenes of the military serving at home and abroad was displayed during the songs "We Are Proud of Our Veterans" and "A Song of Peace."

The soloists were Alexis Reibert, Lucas Litten and Gigi Monteith. The girls performed a choreographed song, "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," which showcased their kazoo-playing ability.

The honorary guests were called to the stage according to the years served.

Veterans representing current duty to World War II were in attendance. They were presented with a certificate by the students thanking them as American heroes for their service to the country.

Edward Cunningham, a fifth-grade trumpet student, played taps as a moment of silence was observed to remember the fallen veterans.

The students sang a version of "God Bless the USA" and concluded the program with a flag waving medley of "You're A Grand Old Flag," "This Land is Your Land" and "America the Beautiful."

The program was sponsored by the PTA and directed by music teacher Christa Stout.
