HCC men put Garrett away at the stripe

The Hagerstown Community College Hawks used some good free throw shooting to pull out a 102-94 win over the Garrett Community College Lakers on Saturday night in a Maryland JuCo Conference men's basketball game at the HCC athletic complex.

HCC (9-1, 4-0) made 25 of its 36 free throws for 70 percent in handing Garrett (7-1, 1-1) its first loss of the season.

"The big key for tonight was that we hit our free throws down the stretch," HCC coach Earl Redden said. "It helped to preserve the lead. The other team just wouldn't go away. They are a very good opponent. They attack the basket very well. They got us into a lot of foul trouble. When we extended the pressure on defense in the last four minutes, it helped us to get a few clutch steals. That led to our free throws."

The contest was close the whole way as Garrett evened the score at 86-86 with four minutes remaining.

The Hawks then immediately went on a 7-0 scoring spurt as they went on to outscore the Lakers 16-8 over the final four minutes to get the victory.

Isaiah Hill, a 6-foot-9 freshman forward, closed the Hawks' 7-0 scoring spurt with a steal and a dunk to extend the lead to 93-86 with 2:29 to go.

"I just tried to play good defense and pick the ball off," Hill said. "I was pretty much excited to finish the play off with a dunk."

Hill came through with team-high totals of 25 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

"I think I did pretty good tonight," Hill said. "Scoring on the inside and rebounding are pretty much my responsibilities. We have got a good team. We have got a few players hurt right now. Once everybody gets healthy, we are going to be a hard team to stop. We have got to work on a few things like free throws and defense."

Hill was one of six HCC players who scored in double digits.

Brandon Rascoe tallied 19 points, while Jordan Brooks contributed 16 points and five assists for the Hawks. Jeremy Myers had 15 points and four assists, while Raason Young had 13 points and K'yan Andrews added 10 points and nine rebounds in the victory.

Francis Gunn scored a team-high 25 points for Garrett. Terrance Taylor delivered 14 points, while Jeffery Lewis connected for 13 points for the Lakers. Mark Smith added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Brian Koonce also scored 12 points for Garrett.

The Hawks led 54-47 at halftime.
