Preps Area roundup -- Leopards cruise past Hancock in season opener

GIRLS BASKETBALL



HANCOCK -- Katie Sprecher led Smithsburg with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Leopards' 60-25 season-opening win over Hancock on Friday.

Allie Nickels added eight points and seven rebounds while Sara Rishell brought down seven boards for Smithsburg (1-0).

Hayley Ruppenthal scored 10 points for the Panthers (0-1).

Mercersburg 46, St. James 14

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Lauren Dobish scored 12 points for Mercersburg Academy.

Taylor Deveaux had six points to lead St. James (0-1).

McConnellsburg 53, Mount Union 31

BELLEVILLE, Pa. -- McConnellsburg showed midseason form in the first six mintues of its first game, pushing out to a 17-2 first-quarter lead on its way to a first-round win at the Belleville Tip-Off Tournament.

Michelle Baker scored 16 points to lead the Spartans (1-0), while Courtney McClure had 10 points and J.J. Deshong finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans led 28-20 at the half and held Mount Union to 11 points in the second half to put the game away.

McConnellsburg faces host Belleville tonight in the tournament final.

Southern Fulton 55, Everett 49

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Brooke Whiteside scored 12 points while Chelsy Hollenshead had 11 points and seven boards and Keena Elbin added nine points, six rebounds and three blocks for Southern Fulton (1-0).

James Buchanan 38, Hanover 30

BIGLERVILLE, Pa. -- Sarah Harryman led James Buchanan with 11 points as the Rockets (1-0) defeated Hanover (0-1) in the Biglerville Tip-Off Tournament.

Lower Dauphin 46, Waynesboro 44

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. -- Lower Dauphin outscored Waynesboro 17-4 in the fourth quarter to edge the Indians in the Lower Dauphin Tournament.

Tim Null scored a game-high 13 points for the Indians (0-1), while Kegan Crider added 10 points.

South Western 58, James Buchanan 49

BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. -- Dylan Rhodes scored 14 points, Sawyer Hollenshead added 10 and Kace Worrell and Shane O'Neal each had six rebounds for James Buchanan in the Paul Corby Tip-Off Tournament at Boiling Springs.

James Buchanan committed 27 fouls in the game and South Western took advantage by making 20 free throws, as opposed to 10 for the Rockets (0-1).

Red Lion 61, Greencastle 24

MANCHESTER, Pa. -- Christian Hoover scored a team-high six points for Greencastle as the Blue Devils (0-1) turned the ball over 29 times in a Northeastern Tip-Off Tournament loss.

Todd Maciejewski scored 19 points for Red Lion (1-0).

CVCS 78, Grace Brethren 64

STEPHENS CITY, Va. -- Nick Bunting recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace Cumberland Valley Christian School to a win in the Shenandoah Christian Academy Touranment.

Five Blazers in all scored in double figures, including Austin Sanders with 17 points, Tyler Larson with 15 and Scott Levy and John Watson each with 10. Larson also had six assists for CVCS (2-0), while Levy added five blocks.
