Local dealer displays Kenworth hybrid truck

December 05, 2008

Truck Enterprises Hagerstown, Inc., 18216 Maugans Ave., will host a display of Kenworth's new medium duty diesel-electric hybrid utility truck Dec. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The truck's visit to the local dealership, located at Exit 9 off Interstate 81, is part of a series of stops at Kenworth dealerships throughout the United States. The purpose of the tour is to show the latest technology available for municipalities and truck fleets interested in being "green" by cutting down on the emissions coming from their trucks and cutting their expenditure on diesel fuel.

The new Kenworth T370 and T270 hybrids are produced by Kenworth Truck Company, a leading heavy- and medium-duty truck manufacturer based in Kirkland, Wash. Kenworth's goals for its medium-duty hybrids are to enhance fuel economy up to 30 percent in pickup and delivery applications, and up to 50 percent in utility operations. (The high rate for a hybrid utility truck, which is often equipped with a utility bucket atop a boom, results from operation of the hybrid's lift on electric power, while a non-hybrid utility truck must idle to operate its lift.)

Above 30 mph, the Kenworth hybrid operates like a standard diesel vehicle with all power coming from the engine. Below 30 mph, it uses a combination of diesel and electricity with the system automatically switching between the two modes of operation. Electricity generated through regenerative braking is stored and used for acceleration, assisting the diesel engine.

Kenworth's hybrids go into full production this year. Purchasers of Kenworth hybrids, equipped with a PACCAR PX-6 engine and the Eaton hybrid system, may qualify for federal tax credits of up to $6,000 for class 6 trucks (GVW of between 19,501 and 26,000 lbs.) and $12,000 for class 7 trucks (GVW of 26,001-33,000 lbs.).
