Donald Alfred "Don" Viens Sr., 81

WINCHESTER, Va. - Donald Alfred "Don" Viens Sr., of Winchester, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Viens was born Sept. 4, 1927, in North Adams, Mass., the son of Alfred Louis and Elizabeth Lucille King Viens. He was in the U.S. Navy for more than 26 years and served in both World War II and the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in October of 1971. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, VFW Post 2123, American Legion Post 21 and the Military Officers Association of America. Mr. Viens was a founder and member of Morgan's Riffleman, a member of the 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry of the North-South Skirmish Association and a member of the Winchester Historical Society. He also was a member of the Elks for 59 years, Winchester Lodge 867 since 1990, and served as Exalted Ruler, Lecturing Knight, Loyal Knight, Leading Knight, Treasurer and on the Board of Governors.

He married Margaret Cecelia McGaw Viens on Feb. 14, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pa. She died in 2001. He married Lily Ann Vanderhule Viens on April 12, 2003 in Winchester.

Along with his wife, Lily Viens, he is survived by five daughters, Alice Waters Treece of North Adams, Patricia Waters of Richmond, Calif., Elizabeth Viens Rini of Winchester, Marie Cecelia Vargas of Hagerstown and Leah Viens Schaefer of Hagerstown; three stepdaughters, Cee Ann Davis Hammack of Winchester, Cara Lee Davis of Raleigh, N.C., and Cheri Marie Godoy of Reisterstown, Md.; a sister, Marie Fields of Livermore, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

A son, Donald Alfred Viens Jr., and a brother, Frances Xavier Viens, preceded him in death.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester with the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating.
