MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John W. Greenfield Sr., 60, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born July 6, 1948, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Wilbur H. Greenfield and Mary E. Richmond Greenfield.

He was the foreman at Bryarly Manor Orchard. In 1972, he was presented the "Golden Apple" award for picking 9,070 bushels of apples in seven weeks. In 1987, he received an honorary chapter farmer award from Future Farmers of America.

He was a Presbyterian.

He played softball, winning league titles, tournaments and MVP awards.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Etta V. Barron Greenfield; two sons, John W. Greenfield Jr. and Curtis L. Greenfield, both of Martinsburg; two sisters, Daisy Howard of Martinsburg and Jean Masters of Inwood, W.Va.; two brothers, Douglas Greenfield and Philip Greenfield, both of Inwood; nieces; and nephews.


He was preceded in death by three sisters, Janet Troiano, Linda Miller Newcomb and Bertha Ann Greenfield; and one brother, Charles Greenfield.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at South Berkeley Funeral Chapel in Inwood. His nephew, Pastor Tim Howard, and his brother-in-law, Robert Howard, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
