Firms charged in illegal alcohol sales

December 04, 2008

The Board of License Commissioners for Washington County, known as the liquor board, met with representatives from eight Hagerstown businesses to discuss incidents in which employees sold alcohol to an underage police officer.

The sales occurred during a period of several days in October, Hagerstown Police Sgt. Kevin Simmers said.

The following businesses were charged with the illegal sale of alcohol to an underage person:

o Carla's Deli, 23 N. Locust St.

o Terrace Liquors, 708 Pennsylvania Ave.

o Hayloft Liquors, 571 Jefferson St.

o Side Pockets, 807 S. Potomac St.

o Buffalo Wings & Beer, 1065 Maryland Ave.

o Uno Chicago Grill, 17734 Garland Groh Blvd.

o Traders on Potomac, 38 S. Potomac St.

o T.G.I. Friday's, 17840 Garland Groh Blvd.

Robert L. Everhart, liquor board chairman, said each business could face a maximum penalty of loss of its liquor license and be ordered to pay a $2,500 fine, but he said that penalty is rarely imposed.

Everhart said the liquor board would make a decision in each case within 30 days.
