Lelia Ann Hudgins, 80, of 13137 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 29, 1927, in Buckingham, Va., she was the daughter of the late William McKinley West and Lelia Booker West.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Grover Hudgins Sr. They were married May 12, 1949.

She was a graduate of Buckingham County (Va.) Public Schools.

She was employed by Ravenwood Lutheran Village as a nurse's assistant from 1979 until 1996, when she retired.

She was a member of St. Joy Baptist Church in Buckingham and Zion Baptist Church in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Helping Hands Ministry, a member and former president of the Usher's Ministry, a member and treasurer of the Concerned Citizens Association, and a volunteer for the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes.


She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Hudgins King of Gladstone, Va., and Valerie Hudgins-Evans of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Thomas G. Hudgins Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Marie Hawthorn of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Janie Claiborne of Hagerstown; one brother, William A. West of Buckingham; two grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at St. Joy Baptist Church, Buckingham, where a wake will be held at noon. The Rev. Charles Hamlett and Elder James E. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Hudgins Family Cemetery, Buckingham.

Visitation was Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Home, Dillwyn, Va.
