Pangborn Elementary wins statewide honor

December 01, 2008

Pangborn Elementary School has received a Maryland Center for Character Education (MCCE) School of the Year Award.

At a recent luncheon hosted by MCCE, schools were recognized for their outstanding character education initiatives.

Pangborn counselor Anne Wilson, school business manager Angela Allen and Washington County Character Counts! Coalition Secretary Sharon Chirgott represented Pangborn and Washington County at the luncheon.

Wilson and Allen accepted a banner and plaque on behalf of the school.

Every classroom at the school features specific lessons in character and decision-making, and there are visual reminders of good character throughout the school, in homework planners and in the school newsletter.

The Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) discipline program emphasizes good behavior and rewards rather than punishes students.

PAWS (Positive Attitudes Will Succeed) cards are earned by students who show good behavior and character, and can be redeemed for privileges or prizes.

Students also gain an understanding of community service through participation in events such as Relay for Life, food drives, buddy readers and environmental improvement activities.

More information about character education at Pangborn Elementary School can be obtained by calling Wilson at 301-766-8282.
