November 30, 2008

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on U.S. 340 near Union Street caused the road to be shut down for about 90 minutes, Harpers Ferry Police Department Patrolman M.S. Armentrout said.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. when a southbound van crossed the center line of U.S. 340 and struck a northbound car, Armentrout said.

The driver of the van, a Maryland resident, was flown to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center, Armentrout said. A family traveling in a Nissan with Virginia registration was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., Armentrout said.

The identities of the accident victims were not being released because the accident still was under investigation, Armentrout said.

The accident caused traffic to be backed up into Maryland and at least as far south as the intersection of U.S. 340 and Bakerton Road, Armentrout said.
