CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Florence Prescott Beckner Dorsett, 86, of Manorcare Health Services and formerly of 21 E. Third St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the nursing home.

Born Jan. 18, 1922, in Winchester, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Wilbur Ripple and Aimee Florence Prescott Beckner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Dorsett, in 1997. They were married June 2, 1946.

She was a 1940 graduate of Waynesboro Senior High School.

She had been employed as a receptionist at Waynesboro Hospital. She and her husband also owned and operated Dorsett Shoes in Waynesboro, from 1964 through 1970.


She served in the WAVES, U.S. Navy Reserves, during World War II.

She was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.

She was a member of National AARP, and a former member of Waynesboro Historical Society, Waynesboro Country Club and local bridge clubs.

In 1999, she co-published "Alma Mater" the history of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. She also served as subscription manager of the periodical, "Antietam Ancestor," beginning in 1983.

She is survived by one daughter, Julie G. Dorsett of Chambersburg; two sons, David A. Dorsett and Todd A. Dorsett, both of Waynesboro; one brother, Wilbur R. Beckner Jr. of Waynesboro; one niece; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Walter E. Dorsett Jr. and Thomas P. Dorsett; one sister, Martha E. Beckner; and one brother, Richard A. Beckner.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

It was her request to have no public viewing.

Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
