South High PTA collecting cards for military in Iraq

November 29, 2008|By ERIN CUNNINGHAM

HAGERSTOWN -- South Hagerstown High School's PTA is collecting Christmas cards that will be sent to military servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq during the holiday season.

PTA President Robert Harr said the group wanted to do something for the community and thought of collecting cards. Harr said he hopes to collect about 10,000 cards.

"I'd be tickled pink if I do get that much," he said. "Whether I get 10 or 10,000, it's something the PTA wants to do."

The cards can be dropped off until Dec. 12 at Susquehanna Bank locations in Washington County.

Students at South High also are collecting cards, and the class that brings in the most cards will receive a free lunch from the PTA, Harr said.

"If they want to buy a box of cards, sign them ... great," he said. "Just so the guys in Iraq get Christmas cards."

South High's PTA has about 60 members, and Harr said the group will accept more. He said the number of volunteers is down from past years, but the same is true in other schools.

The PTA treasurer, who has a military background, is going to help the group secure an address to which the cards can be sent.

"I'd heard of this being done before, and I thought it was something good to do ... something that the PTA could show the staff and the students that we care," Harr said. "Plus, it's showing the county that we are a South Hagerstown PTA, but we're a Washington County PTA. We care about people in the whole county."
