The five free things to do this weekend

November 27, 2008

Keeping on track

Love model-train layouts? If the Trains of Christmas didn't fulfill your need, check out the Quincy (Pa.) Village Model Railroad Club's second annual open house Sunday with three rooms of displays, including a Christmas display.

Fill up on family time

Turkey and all the trimmings are nice, but what's great about Thanksgiving is getting together with family. So enjoy dinner together. Maybe watch some football together. Or play a game. How about Black Friday Rush?

Sights and sounds of Christmas

Take a stroll through downtown Shepherdstown, W.Va., and listen to the strolling carolers as the first of two weekends of Christmas in Shepherdstown begins on Friday. Watch out on Friday. You might get "put-pocketed" as candies are passed out to shoppers and visitors.

Smurf-tastic

Buzz Lightyear, Dr. Seuss' Horton the elephant and a Smurf will be the new giant balloons in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. The Smurfs are celebrating their 50th anniversary; they were created by a Belgian cartoonist in 1958 comic books, according to PRNewswire. The parade will be on TV, beginning at 9 a.m. today on NBC.

On the beat

Gong. It's not another revival of "The Gong Show." It's Shepherd University's Percussion Ensemble and Gamelan Concert on Tuesday. Instruments include drums, gongs, winds and strings.
