CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John R. Alther, 95, of 649 N. Franklin St., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 31, 1913, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary Rossman Alther.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle Claudy Alther, in 1987.

He was employed as a custodian with the Chambersburg Area School District at Buchanan Elementary School and King Street Elementary School.

He served in the Merchant Marines, then in the U.S. Army, during World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn A. Cerifko of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Steve Patterson, Kevin Patterson and Kelly Patterson-Lanes; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandson.


He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Entombment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, with military honors by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to a charity of one's choice.
