Defending champs feast once again at Turkey Trot

Jared Matlick and Jaime Wright repeated as men's and women's champions in Thursday's eighth annual Hagerstown Community College Turkey Trot 5K.

Matlick, 23, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., an HCC graduate, edged Doug Oates, another HCC graduate, by five seconds to defend his men's title. Matlick crossed the line inside the HCC athletic complex in 16 minutes, 10 seconds.

"I was hoping a few people would take it out with me," Matlick said. "(Oates) stuck with me for a while and then it was me by myself. ... It's cool to race here, since this is like my home course."

Oates, 30, took second in 16:15, while Rio Ferrario, a senior at Williamsport High School, was third in 16:59.

Wright, a senior at Slippery Rock University who earned All-American honors at last Saturday's NCAA Division II cross country championships, got a head start on preparations for indoor track with her winning time of 17:54.

"I really don't expect anything of myself other than to do what I'm capable," Wright said. "I was off by one second from the women's Division II (national championships) provisional time, so I'm very excited. We just got done with cross country and my coach told me I could take time off if I wanted, so I took two days, but I thought, 'Why not?' I'm really excited for the indoor season."

Shayna Weir, 22, took second in the women's race in 20:21, while Karen Abbamonte, 50, was third and the first women's master in 20:54.

Rob Hovermale, 44, was the first men's master, clocking 17:11.

In all, 396 runners finished the race. Event organizer Jaime Dick was excited about the large turnout and the food drive, which he hoped would generate 1,000 pounds of canned or boxed goods to be donated to the Community Food Bank Warehouse at Food Resources, Inc.

"Our goal was to make this a community event, make (the runners) feel good before they eat," Dick said. "We get a lot of nontraditional runners to come out."
