WOLFSVILLE, Md. - Charles Upton Smith, 80, of Wolfsville, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore.

Born April 7, 1928, in Wolfsville, he was the son of the late Gorman Josiah and Bertie Gertrude Grossnickle Smith.

He graduated from Middletown High School in 1946.

He was a dairy farmer in Frederick County, Md.

He was a member of Maryland and Virginia Milk Cooperative, Frederick County Farm Bureau and participated in Soil Conservation and Grange activities.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wolfsville.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Beachley Smith; two daughters, Sharon L. Steger and Jennifer Brandenburg, both of Myersville; three sisters, Viola V. Smith of Boonsboro, Grace R. Smith of Wolfsville and Doris Edna Gaver of Myersville; three grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

A celebration of life will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Smithsburg. Pastor David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wolfsville.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home in Myersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 12704 Wolfsville Road, Smithsburg, MD or the charity of one's choice.
