Mail Call

November 23, 2008

"Somebody called Mail Call yesterday saying we should congratulate Mr. Bush for gas prices going down. You know, that's just silly. That was silly to blame him for them going up, even though he's an oil man. But this we can blame him on because of his policies. Yeah, the gas went down, but people still can't afford to fill their tanks up because another half a million people are out of work in just a few weeks. That's his fault. That's his policies' fault. I'll say it, I'll say it until the day I die. He's the worst president we've ever had."

-- Hagerstown

"In reference to A3 on Thursday the 20th, 'County, state officials mull pay hikes': nice article. Finally we get to see something in writing. Only problem is, what fringe benefits do these people get for these positions that they're working in? Do they get vacation pay, health benefits, retirement or what? I'd like to know. We never see anything mentioned -- the salaries, but what other expenses do they get?"

"For all of you who are calling in complaining about Obama: Haven't you suffered enough? Nearly everything that could go wrong during the past eight years did go wrong. Give the new president a chance. You have nothing else to lose at this point."

-- Halfway

"It's laughable when someone says a new power line is not needed. Not too long ago, a household had one TV, one computer, one cell phone, no rechargeable tools. Now every household has a TV, computer, cell phone for every member of the family. Schools have computers for every student. Businesses have computers for every employee. Just eliminate the households and the problem is solved."

"I just want to let you people out there to know that's on energy assistance and waiting for their grants to come in, I just called the oil company to try to figure out, you know, get on a budget plan, and they told me my money was there. I never got a notice from energy assistance saying my grant was in, but the money is in, the money was there. So anybody else is on energy assistance, don't wait for a notice from energy assistance to see if your grant's come through. Call your oil company, ask them if the money's there, instead of sitting there freezing. Your money might be there and they haven't notified you."

"I'm calling in response to a recent Mail Call that stated the only reason people voted for Obama was because he was African-American or that they were swayed by his Hollywood charm. I believe it's a sad day when someone believes that a majority of Americans cannot see the writing on the wall. They've had eight years of Bush running the country, and we are where we are. Certainly not all the problems can be blamed on Bush, but his handling of the problems is where he has failed the American people. Barack Obama presented himself well. That could rally people to work together in difficult times, and America needs that man to help us in these difficult times. I'm proud of him and I'm proud of America."

"I see where a store in Waynesboro is going to be open on Thanksgiving Day, from 9 until 3. I think that's a shame. Can't you wait until the next day to buy whatever it is you need?"

-- Fayetteville, Pa.

"The stock market is up 31 points today. We have 7,000 to go."

-- Fiddlersburg

"Well, they elected that first black president and now the stock market's at the lowest level in five years. So a lot of good that did. They should have elected McCain."

-- Hagerstown

"This is in reference to GM. Just wanted to say my father was employed with GM 32 years and passed away seven years ago. He paid union dues faithfully every month and took less raises because they said that they were paying for health benefits. As far as I'm concerned, today, if they take away the retirees' money, then they should give back all those union dues these people have paid every month to ensure themselves health care when they did retire. The big executives of all these companies, let them give back their big bonuses they've gotten all these years, and that would help GM get back on their feet, and help the employees that worked to put them where they are today."

"I'm calling concerning a letter that was written in about NASCAR. People must not know much about NASCAR because they support their own self. They don't ask anybody for anything and I think that it's crazy to want to ban something that people like so well."

-- Williamsport

"I am calling in response to the callers that say Obama is a charlatan who tricked the people into voting for him and will be trouble for the U.S. And these remarks come from people who probably voted for 'W' twice, and everyone knows where that got us."

-- Sharpsburg

"This is in regard to a Thursday, Nov. 20, article from a Shepherdstown, W.Va., person. They think it ought to be against the law, when Obama takes office, to criticize him. I don't believe there was any law against criticizing George Bush for the last eight years. What are they talking about?"
