Mail Call

November 23, 2008

"Nobody asked me, but why can they fix rail crossings across the county, but can't fix the most traveled crossing on Eastern Boulevard near Security (Road)? You have to slow down and veer to the side, as it shakes your car apart. If anyone else agrees, add your comments before cold weather and you break something on your car."

-- Hagerstown

"With holiday travel coming, everyone should read 'Crosses Along the Highway,' published by Lloyd Waters, Saturday, Nov. 15. Let's have a safe and happy holiday. Thank you, Lloyd, for this excellent article, and keep them coming."

"Republicans, stop your crying. Obama won. Enjoy the benefits that you didn't get from George Bush."

-- Clear Spring

"I have what I consider a partial solution to handling road rage and for those out there on the highway we all encounter. If it's a business vehicle with a phone number on the side of it, write the number down. Call that business and complain to them. They will certainly handle it, because they don't want their company business thrown out there, advertised on the side of a vehicle that's driving ... I've tried this, and it works, and if you're a daily commuter and see the same person every day, like I'm sure some people do, jot down the number, call your local police. They'll look into it."

"Reading all the Mail Calls today and the last couple days about Obama and Bill O'Reilly and Hannity and Colmes, and all these people who spread nothing but hate and discontent, it's only because they have an audience that gravitates towards this kind of thing. They're full of hate and discontent, so they want to spread it around."

-- Hagerstown

"I'm sure Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity will give the new president all the support that the Democrats have given President Bush for the last eight years. Everyone knows that Obama is going to be a disaster, except the people who believe he was borned in a manger."

-- Hagerstown

"I've been watching these hearings on the Big Three automakers, GM, Ford and Chrysler. It's not hard for me to see that what they're trying to do. These people down there in Congress, in the Senate, are trying to bust the unions up, especially the Republicans, knowing that they voted for Barack Obama, and they're more worried about busting up the unions ... renegotiate the contract and lose their wages, lose their medical care, lose their retirement. That's all they're bothered about. I hope someday that them guys gotta go in a soup line."

-- Hagerstown

"Why are the elderly in this area so critical and greedy? They want all the money to be given to them, and it seems their criticism of others never ends."

-- Smithsburg

"This is how I improved my junk mail problem. Look at each piece of mail. When there is a postage-paid envelope enclosed, tear off your name and address from the catalog or the brochure, write on the label 'Please remove my name from your list.' Then you mail it back in the postage-paid envelope. Costs you nothing. Look for an 800 number. Call the number and ask to have your name removed."

-- Boonsboro

"The Wall Street Journal of Wednesday, Nov. 19, ran a large article about Washington County's Dr. Mary Money and her work and research on a diabetic medication called Avandia, produced by drug maker GlaxoSmithKline. It was very informative and I would like to see The Herald-Mail run it in its entirety."

-- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in response to the message in Mail Call about the hit and run. I just wanted to say that I totally agree about the hit-and-run drivers. My vehicle actually was hit and run in front of my house. My vehicle was totaled. They found the person that did it, and she had no insurance, so my insurance was responsible for paying for my vehicle, and I had to pay the deductible, and actually she got in no trouble, and I think it's ridiculous ... and actually she is still driving her vehicle around town, and mine just got hauled off today on a rollback. So I think that they need to have tougher punishments for people with no insurance."

-- Hagerstown

"To the person who was calling on what to do with their junk mail: Make sure you remove all of your personal information, and if it has a self-addressed stamped envelope, stuff it all back in the envelope and mail it to them. It'll fill up their landfills and waste their time. And it might make you laugh a little."

-- Hagerstown

"To the parents that's giving the BOE trouble on bus stops: Stop and think how confused the bus driver is. You ought to be ashamed. When I was younger, I walked from the West End to North High -- walked. We had no bus."

-- Washington County, East End

"So the automakers want a bailout, so to help, they could cut some of the retiree benefits of Christmas bonus, health benefits, raises because the worker gets one, and who knows what all else. Let them live like the rest do on Medicare and Social Security. That could be one place to start."

-- Hancock
