FREDERICK, Md. - Mrs. Nancy L. Helsel died peacefully in her place at Sunrise of Frederick on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008.

She was the wife of the late Pastor Frank E. Helsel for more than 60 years.

Born in Dighton, Kan., she was the daughter of Winifred and John Lawther.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Linda Davis and husband, George B. Davis, of Frederick, and Carol Diane McCaffrey and husband, Larry W. McCaffrey, of Houston, Texas. Mrs. Helsel also is survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer Richardson, Johanna Carney, Lisa Naylor, Amy McCaffrey, Shawn McCaffrey and Katherine McCaffrey; and six great-grandchildren.

As a military chaplain's wife, Mrs. Helsel was always active in the American Red Cross programs. During the Korean War, she cared for American and Australian soldiers at a hospital near Hiroshima, Japan. She also taught at the American Elementary School in Eta Jima, Japan. Mrs. Helsel was active in the "Women of the Chapel Program." She and her daughters joined her husband on three overseas peacetime tours of duty in Japan, Germany and France.

After 25 years in the military, Nancy and her husband were called to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Boonsboro, Md. A devoted pastor's wife, she was active in the life of the congregation.

Upon moving to Frederick, Mrs. Helsel was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She organized and directed the Altar Guild. She was active in Evangelical Lutheran Church Women.

She served several years with the Literacy Council of Frederick County and was a member of Frederick Church Women United.

She lived at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, Md., for more than 16 years. In January 2008, she returned to Frederick to be with family and was lovingly cared for by all at Sunrise.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Nov. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford PA Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 E. Church St., Frederick, with the Rev. Dr. David G. Oravec officiating. Entombment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Light refreshments will be served after the service at Trunk Hall of Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Altar Guild at Evangelical Lutheran Church.
