Mail Call

November 21, 2008

"I think it would a great service to the Hagerstown and Washington County area if The Herald-Mail would provide a map showing the lowest gas prices in the region. In these difficult times, you'd be helping people save money. For an example, check out www.wtopnews.com. I can even check our local prices."

- Chewsville

"To the person who was robbed of the wagon: Sadly, it's happening all over town. My girlfriend has had numerous items removed from her front porch, and in the day, for gosh sakes. I purposely sat and watched teenagers, without remorse, take it, walk across the street and trash it, and laugh. Course, when I walk towards them with mean eyes, their excuse is 'we were just having fun.' I'm gonna have fun, too, watching them explain to their parents ... but I won't leave without being repaid. The alleys need to be (patrolled) big time, but not in marked cars, hello, as well as the streets."

"This bailout on the General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, they get half of their vehicles made overseas; China and Korea, Canada, Mexico. I think if the big companies want the vehicles made over there and bring them over here, they should be made to pay some of this bailout, instead of putting the tax on the American people."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regards to somebody called in last week about what they did with the Maugansville school. They took it, the bricks and the block, I know - they took it up to Scotland, Pa., into a landfill. And also, I agree with the person who wrote in the 17th about the death penalty, from Boonsboro. I certainly agree with them. The people that they execute do not rekill again."

- Maugansville

"I was just calling to see if anyone knows, is Allegheny Power still gonna raise their rates, and if so, when is that gonna take effect, and by how much?"

- Hagerstown

"I got my electric bill and my water bill - I'm confused. My electric bill went up $85. ... I do that average thing, $200 a month, when I was paying $115 before. My water bill just went up, even though I used less water than I did previously. I'm trying to figure out, where did my money go for the electric bill, all that average payment, when I used less electricity and less water than I did before? I'm a little bit concerned about this."

- Hagerstown

"Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk show hosts are entertainers making millions playing to people in this country who need to get a life. They say whatever makes and keeps them popular with the people who buy into what they say. I think they have a dangerous mouth, which can encourage a few very disturbed people to do dangerous things. "

- Greencastle, Pa.

"This is for the Sharpsburg caller who's worried about Nancy Pelosi. Don't worry about her. Worry about your Republican friends. They're the ones that's caused the problem. And about bailing out the auto industry, back in the '80s when Reagan was in, they bailed out Chrysler, and then Chrysler paid it back. So they can bail them out and they can pay them back. It will help the economy."

- Hagerstown

"Golly gee, Democrats have never complained about a Republican president before he took office, so why are Republicans complaining about a Democratic president before he takes office?"

- Hagerstown

"I recently done a job for a friend of mine, and he paid me by check. I went to his bank to cash the check, and he had the money in his account, but the bank charged me $5 to cash a check from his account, because I didn't have an account there. I don't think that's right. He has an account with the bank, but yet I was charged $5. They said it's policy. I could use that $5, because I'm currently unemployed and I'm working to help people out, and then boom, they turn around and they charge me."

"Whoever called in about the comparison of The Maryland Theatre to the Weinberg Center and the Capital Theater is right - no comparison. The guy that used to run the theater started to get things going, but after he left, the theater has been in limbo. No experienced management, and a board of directors with no sense of direction. They have waited long enough to find a director to get things going again."

- Hagerstown

"Just to comment on the article Terrapins are finally where they want to be, and they use the song 'Amazing Grace' ... 'I once was lost but now I'm found, was blind but now I see.' I don't see how that pertains to any sporting event or the University of Maryland football season."

- Bunker Hill, W.Va.
