Ruritan bears soothe those in hospital

November 20, 2008

Rudy, the official mascot for Ruritan National, is celebrating his 20th birthday with Ruritan.

Rudy's purpose is to bring happiness to children and adults who are in need of comfort.

Dennis Barthlow, Zone 2 governor for the Washington County Ruritan Clubs, has made it one of his goals to utilize Rudy in promoting Ruritan and community service.

Barthlow has asked all Washington County Ruritan clubs to purchase one case of Rudy Bears to distribute to nursing homes and Washington County Hospital.

Barthlow, along with Robert Merrell and Rex Harrell (members of the Keedysville club), went to the Hospital Sept. 12 where they presented 95 Rudy Bears to the head nurse of the Emergency Room to divide with the pediatrics unit.

Rudy bears will be handed out to young children as they are brought into the ER and to patients on the pediatric unit. The Keedysville and Maugansville clubs, and the Pithian Sisters of Keedysville, provided Rudy Bears for this project.

The Leitersburg club distributed Rudy Bears to its local Fire and Rescue Squads. Ringgold will distribute its bears to the Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital. The Wilson club will hand out its bears to patients at Williamsport Nursing Home, and the Downsville club, along with the Keedysville Ruri-teen group, will be visiting Reeders Nursing Home.
