HCC volleyball team drops first match at nationals

November 20, 2008|By DAN KAUFFMAN

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. -- The Hagerstown Community College volleyball team fell to Des Moines Area Community College 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 25-17 in the first round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Chula Vista Resort on Thursday.

"They have a really good outside hitter and a middle, and their hitters are very verasatile, they can hit anywhere," Hawks coach Beth Domenico said. "We blocked them well, but they pass very well and play very good defense also. It was a little frustrating for their hitters because they didn't get many balls down.

"I know that first game was very important, and if we had pulled it out, maybe it would have been a different outcome."

Julia Becker led the Hawks' attack with nine kills, Morena Ribeiro had eight, Becca Morgan had seven, Kierra Nelson five and Rachel Koehler four. Tara Garver had 33 assists. Katie Koontz had five blocks, Becker had four and Nelson three. Koehler had four aces and Garver and Morgan each had three. Morgan had six digs and Becker added five.

The Hawks (33-10) will face East Central (Mo.) today at noon. With a win, HCC would play again at 4:30 p.m.

"I think they'll be up for that match, but some of them are very disappointed we lost this one since they know they can't finish better than ninth now," Domenico said. "I'm hoping they come back and at least get three matches out of this weekend."
