Ethan Schultz, a fourth-grade student at Paramount Elementary School, has advanced to the Baltimore Ravens' NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Team Championship.

The competition will be held Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. The winner in each age group will advance to the Punt, Pass and Kick National Finals, which will be held before a playoff game in January.

Ethan, the 9-year-old son of Lisa and Sherrill Schultz, won his 8-9 age-group event at Paramount and then claimed the regional title at the Westminster YMCA to earn a trip to Baltimore. The competition will be held prior to the Ravens-Philadelphia Eagles game on Sunday.

Competing in the rain against his schoolmates, Schultz easily won the Paramount competition with 137.3 points.

"I didn't do as well as I would have liked because of the weather," Ethan said.

At the regional contest, he overpowered the competition with 187.4 points. Overall scores are based on distance and accuracy.

"There were four different regionals in the state and the top five leading scores from those four regionals advanced to Baltimore," Sherrill Schultz said. "The competition on Sunday will be held before the game and the participants will also have a passing drill at halftime."

Ethan is an active young man. In addition to maintaining a high grade-point average in the classroom, he plays baseball and soccer and calls football his favorite sport.

"My favorite team is the Steelers and I like Jerome Bettis and Troy Polamalu," Ethan said.

Bettis, like Ethan, has battled asthma problems over the years.
