Claud Estes Kitchens Jr., 79, of 1068 Lindsay Lane in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Tuesday, Dec. 18, 1928, in Macon, Ga., he was the son of the late Claud Estes Kitchens Sr. and Hildred Sessions Kitchens.

Dr. Kitchens attended the University of South Carolina on a basketball scholarship and earned a reputation as a "cool, calculating piece of long-range artillery" for the Carolina Gamecocks. He earned a master's degree in education in 1951, and a Ph.D. in education in 1961, with a dissertation that presented groundbreaking work on the importance of teacher/parent conferences on student achievement.

Dr. Kitchens taught school for several years and was a principal for several years. In 1971, he became superintendent of Richland County I Public Schools in Columbia, S.C., where he distinguished himself by successfully leading the public school system through integration. In 1973, Dr. Kitchens was selected as superintendent of Washington County Public Schools in Hagerstown, where he served for 13 years; and in 1984, he was chosen as Deputy Maryland State Superintendent of Education. Dr. Kitchens retired in 1993. Dr. Joseph Shilling, former state superintendent of education, said of Dr. Kitchens, "there is no educator in Maryland, or anywhere else for that matter, who has successfully combined a genuine love and concern for children and young people with outstanding professional competence than Claud Kitchens."

Dr. Kitchens was proud to have been president of the South Carolina Education Association (1970-1971), president of the Superintendent's Association of Maryland and of the Retired Superintendents of Maryland. In 1984, Dr. Kitchens was voted one of the top 100 educators in America by the National School Boards Association. Dr. Kitchens was especially honored to have been a long-standing member of the Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne Clark Kitchens; three daughters, Carol Anne Crane and husband, David A. Trout, of Columbia, Md., Margaret E. Kitchens and husband, Ronald Pike, of Hagerstown, and Jennie Marie Lindman and husband, Glenn, of Woodruff, S.C.; one son, Thomas E. Kitchens and wife, Jeanne, of Hagerstown; sister, Carmel Bryant of Macon, Ga.; brother, Gary Kitchens of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Don Stevenson officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
