Washington County library to host Picturing America program

November 19, 2008

Washington County Free Library has announced it has been selected to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America program. Picturing America tells the story of America through its art and brings American art and history directly to curious minds of all generations.

Picturing America is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities provided in cooperation with the American Library Association.

The selected works portray America's history.

Selections include great American leaders such as George Washington's portrait by Gilbert Stuart and Alexander Gardner's photograph of Abraham Lincoln. Our nation's Native American heritage is depicted in such images as Black Hawk's "Sans Arc Lakota" Ledger Book.

The images will be on display on a rotating basis at the Central Library in Hagerstown during regular hours. A set of images is also available for viewing at the Hancock Library. Call the Central Library at 301-739-3250, ext. 136, or the Hancock Library at 301-678-5300 for information or visit www.washcolibrary.org.
