November 19, 2008|By JOSHUA BOWMAN

Washington County Public Schools saw a slight increase in total enrollment from September 2007 to September 2008, according to projections presented at a meeting Tuesday between the Board of Education and the Washington County Commissioners.

Elementary school enrollment saw the largest increase, while middle school enrollment stayed almost even and high school enrollment declined slightly.

In September, 10,029 elementary students were enrolled, up 107 students from the 9.922 students enrolled in September 2007.

The school system had 4,887 middle school students in September, 20 more than it had enrolled at the same time last year.

High school enrollment declined by 61 students, from 6,535 in September 2007 to September 2008.

In 2009, the school system is projecting an increase of 44 elementary students and 108 middle school students.

The school system is projecting a decrease of 114 high school students in 2009.

Robert Spong, facilities planning manager, said the projected decrease can be attributed to a smaller-than-average eighth-grade class that will move to the high schools next year.
