More cards needed soon for annual drive for U.S. troops

November 18, 2008

KEEDYSVILLE - With the Nov. 20 deadline looming, Lynn Jones said only about 10,000 holiday cards have been collected by the South Washington County Military Support Group for U.S. troops serving in the Middle East.

"In 2007, we sent 175 military members and their units 119,434 cards in three countries - Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq," Jones said in early October.

The card drive started several years ago when she and others learned that many military members got no cards or packages while they were serving in the Middle East.

Jones said she is hoping now that the election is over, people will start getting into the holiday spirit and prepare their Christmas cards for the troops.

Anyone with a family member serving in the Middle East is asked to contact the group so they can receive cards. Full names and unit address are needed.

Jones can be reached at 301-432-4979 or via e-mail at lalollie2278@verizon.net.

Cards may be store-bought or homemade; no envelopes or postage are needed. They should be signed and will be screened for security issues. Messages of support are suggested and pen pals may be requested.

The cards and monetary donations for mailing costs may be sent to SWCMSG, c/o Lynn Jones, P.O. Box 223, Keedysville, MD 21756. Arrangements may be made for pickup at schools and churches.

Volunteers will read the cards Nov. 30 and prepare them for shipping at Camp Manidokan in Knoxville from 1 to 5 p.m.
