Area roundup -- HCC men win in overtime

ANNANDALE, Va. -- Amaurys Fermin went 1-of-2 from the foul line with two seconds left in overtime to lift Hagerstown Community College to a 108-107 victory over Northern Virginia on Sunday.

Fermin and Isaiah Hill each had a triple-double for the Hawks (3-1). Hill had 26 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks -- all team highs -- while Fermin had 21 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Also for HCC, K'yan Andrews had 17 points, Raason Young had 16 points and Will Taylor had 10 rebounds and five points.

Sam Eligwe scored a game-high 38 points for Northern Virginia, which came back from a 56-40 halftime deficit to tie the game at 100 at the end of regulation.


UDC 76, Shepherd 75

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Kechan Myers hit one of two free throws with three seconds left in the game to lift UDC (1-1) over Shepherd University in in the consolation game of the Clarion Hotel Tipoff Tournament.

A last-second 3-point attempt by Shepherd's Jonathan Motichka rimmed out as the Firebirds held on for the victory.

Tyrone Roach led the Rams (1-1) with 23 points, fueled by a 7-for-10 performance from beyond the arc.


Assumption 72, Shepherd 51

EASTON, Mass. -- Kayla Parker scored a game-high 20 points to lead Assumption College to a win over Shepherd University in the Skyhawks Classic at Stonehill College.

Anna Kauffman had 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the floor. for Shepherd (0-2). Colleen Shumaker had nine points and 10 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.


Hanlins run in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. -- Cameron Hanlin, 20, of Hagerstown placed 22nd overall at the Richmond Marathon in 2 hours, 53 minutes, 55 seconds.

His older sister, Jessica Hanlin, 22, who was the 2003 Maryland Class 2A state cross country champion as a senior at North Hagerstown, placed 607th in 3:55:35. She was the 165th female.
