THE WOODS, W.Va. - Ray S. Johnston, 74, of The Woods, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 3, 1934, in Albert Lea, Minn., he was the son of the late Floyd Edwin Johnston and Harriet Isabel Smalling Johnston Besh.

In 1968, he founded and was president of Potomac Valley Properties Inc., parent company of The Woods Resort, a 1,200-home community and resort featuring two 18-hole golf courses, which he designed.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

His community service included serving as president of the Martinsburg/Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Panhandle Home Builder's Association, Eastern Gateway Travel Council, Martinsburg/Berkeley County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Home Builders Association of West Virginia. He served as chairman of the Gateway Foundation, vice president of the Berkeley County Economic Development Authority, delegate to the 1986 White House Conference on Small Business and as a director of Peoples National Bank of Martinsburg. He was also founder of the West Virginia Governor's Conference on Housing.

His recognitions included Outstanding Citizen of the Year (Blaine, Minn.), a Lifetime Achievement Award for the Promotion of Tourism in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year, Eastern Panhandle Builder of the Year and an honorary doctorate from Shepherd University.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Madeline V. Johnston; two daughters, Joy D. Johnston Johnson and Sally Johnston; three sisters, Helen George of Janesville, Iowa, Ruth Dewey of Antioch, Tenn., and Mary Beth Kourey of Ankeny, Iowa; and three granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Conrow and Dorothy Hites; and two brothers, Carl Johnston and Melvin Johnston.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Jack Vineyard will officiate. Burial will be in Hedges Chapel Cemetery at The Woods.

A viewing will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
