MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Dorothy "Dollie" L. Mellott, 87, of South Brooklyn Road, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at her home.

Born May 24, 1921, in Neelyton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Luther and Beulah Nead Locke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dayton Mellott.

She operated a forklift at Letterkenny Army Depot.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 517 of Mercersburg, where she served as sergeant of arms for many years, Mercersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Farm Women of Huntingdon County, Golden Agers of Shade Gap and as the oldest member, was dubbed "Queen Mother" of the "Red Lockes" Red Hat Society.

She is survived by four children, Gerald Mellott of Chambersburg, Janice Gray of York, Pa., Julie Neil of Englewood, Fla., and Tamara Cupic of New York City; eight grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Whitney; five sisters, Hazel Brown, Mary Brown, Janet Locke, Mildred Linn and Bernice Kling; and four brothers, Robert, Wallace, Richard and Stanley Locke.

Viewings will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg, and prior to the funeral services Thursday at 11 a.m. at Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap, Pa. The Rev. Donald Bender and Pastor David Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201; or to Mercersburg American Legion Auxiliary, Keefer Drive, Mercersburg, PA 17236.
