Local artists raise more than $1,000 for Washington County animal shelter

November 16, 2008

The third annual Art for the Animals Challenge, hosted by Ellen and Roger Collins of Howard's Art Supplies and Frames at 1256 Dual Highway, raised more than $1,000 for the Humane Society of Washington County.

Each year the Collinses offer 5-by-7 canvasses for $1 to anyone interested in participating in the event.

All artwork is to be completed and submitted for a silent auction and for Popular Choice Award voting. More than 93 submissions of artwork were accepted this year from artists from novice to professional.

This year's winner of the Popular Choice Award was Ashley Pennesi with her painting of Vinchinso Nipkiss III.

Ellen and Roger Collins would like to thank everyone who submitted art work for this event.

They would like to acknowledge Beth Beckner-Mills and Tamara Hoffman, local artists who submit numerous pieces for the event each year. Both artists work in oils.

Paul Miller, executive director of the animal shelter, is pleased with the response to the challenge.

"We are very grateful to both Ellen and Roger Collins from Howard's for hosting the third annual Art for the Animals Challenge."

"This is a unique opportunity for residents of Washington County to show off their artistic talents while also helping the shelter. We are very grateful for their participation."

All the proceeds from the sale of the canvasses and the silent auction benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.
