Veterans to watch Army-Navy game on TV in Funkstown

November 14, 2008

FUNKSTOWN - The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) will host veterans from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., on Saturday, Dec. 6, to watch the 109th annual Army-Navy football game on television.

More than 30 veterans will join Legion members for the event - the first time for an Army-Navy game.

"We have hosted NASCAR races and football playoff games for veterans in the past," said Matt Smith, SAL commander. "It is always a great day when these veterans can get out of the hospital, even if for a few hours, and have fun."

Smith said Lou Guerrero, first vice commander, has been the main person organizing the event. The group will receive merchandise from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, as well as local vendors.

"We are really excited about sponsoring this event," Smith said.
