November 13, 2008

Firefighters responded to a fire early Wednesday at the former Playland building at 13610 Pennsylvania Ave., a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

The fire, which was reported at 3:34 a.m., caused about $30,000 in damage to the vacant building, which is owned by Hagerstown Investments, according to a press release from Deputy Maryland State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst.

Someone passing by the building reported the fire, which started in a second-floor room, Ernst said.

Firefighters from Maugansville, Long Meadow, Leitersburg and Greencastle, Pa., responded, Ernst said. Community Rescue Service, the Washington County Special Operations unit, the Emergency Air Unit and the Washington County Rehab Unit also responded, he said.

Investigators still were trying to determine what caused the fire. No injuries were reported.

Anyone who was in the area of the fire between midnight and 3:30 a.m. who saw any suspicious activity may call the fire marshal at 301-791-7458.
